Your instincts scream at you to turn around. You learned long ago not to ignore them. “Turn it around!” you order. “Get us as far from shore as you can!” There’s no way of knowing if you’ve made the right decision, but it’s better to be cautious. Losing a day is a lot better than losing your ship — or your life.

As your ship bobs up and down on the ocean waves, you stand on the deck. Hazel, Abner, and Ezekiel are all getting some much-needed rest while you stand guard. You watch as the eastern horizon slowly brightens, then as the sun finally peeks over the horizon.

Just as you’re about to head below decks, a noise echoes across the ocean. It’s like thunder but much sharper — and the sky is clear. BOOM! There it is again. You hear the rustle of feet as your crew rushes to see what’s happening.

“Bring it in a little,” you order. Abner takes the helm, guiding the ship closer to shore. Through a small telescope, you scan the horizon.

“There!” you shout, pointing. “Warships ahead. They’re ours!”

You can barely believe what you’re seeing. Several wooden-hulled steamers are flanked by a ship unlike anything you’ve ever seen. The ship appears to be clad in armor.

The armored ship blasts its guns at a pair of Union blockade ships. Another series of loud booms thunders across the ocean. Something explodes. The fireball is big enough that the others can see it without the telescope.
